Sparta Township is set for a pivotal election on November 4, as two seasoned candidates, Michael Sylvester and Molly Whilesmith, compete for a single seat on the Township Council. This vacancy arose following the April resignation of Dan Chiariello.

Michael Sylvester, a longtime resident and former member of both the planning and zoning boards, emphasizes the need for fiscal responsibility and community-focused governance. He criticizes the current administration for decisions leading to financial strain and increased borrowing. Sylvester pledges to restore trust and stability by addressing the budget deficit, enhancing staff retention, and promoting economic development. He asserts that his extensive experience in land use and business leadership uniquely qualifies him to serve effectively.

Molly Whilesmith, who served on the council from 2010 to 2022, including a term as mayor, brings a wealth of experience to the race. She highlights her commitment to opposing the proposed mega-warehouse project, citing concerns over increased traffic on Route 15. Whilesmith also vows to honor the outcome of the upcoming cannabis referendum and aims to restore the township's financial surplus by curbing unnecessary spending. She believes her institutional knowledge will provide continuity and steady leadership during this critical period.

The election will also feature a referendum on whether cannabis can be sold within 250 feet of schools and preschools, a topic that has garnered significant community interest. Residents are encouraged to participate in the election to shape the future of Sparta's municipal leadership and address pressing issues such as economic development, zoning, and community priorities.

For more information on the candidates and voting procedures, residents can contact the Sparta Township Clerk's office.
