Our Local News:

Sparta Township Public Schools shared encouraging feedback from staff regarding the district’s updated cell phone policy, which was implemented to reduce distractions and improve student engagement. The policy, introduced at the beginning of the 2024–2025 school year, prohibits student phone use during instructional time unless explicitly permitted for educational purposes. Phones may be used during lunch or recess.

Administrators and teachers across Sparta schools—including Sparta High School and Sparta Middle School—have observed improved classroom focus, increased student participation, and stronger peer interactions. Sparta High School Principal Ronnie Spring noted that students are more present and engaged, while Middle School Principal Stephanie DeMarco reported fewer behavioral issues and more meaningful social connections.

Superintendent Matthew Beck emphasized that the policy is designed to promote responsible technology use and restore balance in the learning environment. The district is committed to ongoing evaluation and welcomes feedback from families and staff.

Parents have expressed support, citing reduced stress and improved communication with their children. For more information, families can contact the Sparta Township Public Schools administration office at (973) 729-3641 or visit the district’s website.

On August12, 2025 the Sparta Township Council unanimously approved Resolution 9-9 to purchase a 2025 Elgin Whirlwind Series MV street sweeper from W.E. Timmerman Co., Inc. The $435,260.03 purchase will be made through the National Sourcewell Cooperative Contract, which offers cost-effective procurement options.

The new sweeper includes a “snorkel hose” for cleaning storm drains and catch basins, replacing the township’s 10-year-old unit. Delivery is expected within 12 to 18 months.

During the meeting, resident Ron Day raised concerns about the township’s financial health, questioning whether the purchase was prudent given limited surplus funds and unplanned budget revenues. He estimated Sparta needs $31 million annually to meet municipal expenses and expressed worry over dwindling capital reserves, reportedly around $750,000.

Township Manager James Zepp responded by affirming confidence in the budget, citing collaboration with CFOs and adjustments to the uncollected taxes rate to help replenish reserves. Zepp acknowledged the concerns and agreed to provide updates in future manager’s reports.

Sparta Township Public Schools (STPS) will hold a bond referendum vote on September 16 to fund major facility upgrades aimed at maintaining the district’s high academic standards and addressing aging infrastructure. If approved, projects could begin in summer 2026.

Key proposed improvements include:

  • HVAC, electrical, roofing, and window upgrades across multiple schools to improve efficiency and air quality.
  • Modernized high school science labs for enhanced STEM learning.
  • A 20-classroom addition at Alpine Elementary, featuring a high school–sized gym and a dedicated special programs room.

Many facilities date back to the 1960s and require updates to match the quality of education inside them. The referendum would leverage $16.9 million in state aid to reduce the local tax burden - funding not available through the regular operating budget.

The district emphasizes that a referendum gives the community a direct voice in shaping its schools’ future. A virtual forum recording features presentations from the district’s architect, bond counsel, and financial experts, answering community questions.

For accessibility assistance or more information, email vote@sparta.org. Full details, renderings, and timelines are available on the official referendum page.
