On January 2, 2026, Lake Mohawk in Sparta, New Jersey, became the scene of a tense rescue when Patrolman Michael Poon braved thin ice to save a dog named Sunkiss.
A neighbor had watched as Sunkiss, a 10-year-old Labrador, and her younger companion Bruno wandered onto the frozen lake before Sunkiss broke through the ice.
Bodycam footage captured Poon’s courageous effort as he guided the frightened dog back to shore through icy waters.
The dogs had slipped out after finding a flaw in their electric fence, said their relieved owner, Chance Dobbs.
Both pets were safely reunited with Dobbs, unharmed.
Officials are urging residents to use caution near frozen lakes this winter, as dangerous conditions may change suddenly.
Sparta will also offer a Free Rabies Vaccine Clinic for pets on January 24 to promote animal health and community safety. Read More... |

Lady Bug is a friendly, social girl:
She’s already spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped, so she’s all set to go home. As a young pup, she’ll need a bit of guidance and training, but she’ll repay you with a lifetime of loyalty, laughter, and puppy kisses. Open your heart and home - make Lady Bug your new best friend today!
