Our Local News:

Sparta Township Public Schools are stepping up their fight against chronic absenteeism, an issue that impacts student learning and school success.

During the August 21 Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Matthew Beck stressed how crucial regular attendance is for academic growth as he introduced the 2025–2026 Corrective Action Plan (CAP).

Students missing 18 days or more in a school year are considered chronically absent—a risk factor for falling behind or dropping out.

By New Jersey state policy, schools with a 10% absenteeism rate must act to reverse the trend.

Progress is being made: Alpine Elementary and Sparta Middle School both brought their rates below the state average, though Sparta High School still faces rising challenges.

Excused absences for illness, religious reasons, or college visits do not count toward chronic absenteeism.

The CAP features targeted teams, data analysis, and sustainable solutions to boost student attendance.

Community input is invited at the September 18 Board meeting at Mohawk Avenue School.

Area firefighters, police, and EMS teams will gather in a unified show of support.

The Newton Choir will open the morning with the National Anthem, setting a tone of respectful remembrance.

Herb Yardley, Chair of the SCCC Board of Trustees, will welcome all attendees before keynote speakers discuss the ongoing legacy of 9/11.
