Township Spring Street Sweeping Kicks Off Sparta Public Works has launched its annual township-wide spring street sweeping program, starting the first week of April. Residents are asked to keep roadways as clear as possible - that means moving cars, garbage cans, and yes, basketball hoops away from the curb when the sweeper comes through. Lawn repairs from snow plow damage will begin in late April or early May. Reach Public Works at 973-729-6178 or Sparta.DPW@spartanj.org with any road repair needs.

Sparta & Sussex County History Bite

💡 Did You Know?

The Iron Road That Put Sparta on the Map

Long before Route 15 or the internet, Sparta got its first real connection to the outside world on steel rails. In 1882, the New Jersey Midland Railroad extended its line from Ogdensburg all the way through to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania - and for the first time, a proper station was built right in Sparta.

What followed was a transformation. City dwellers from Newark and New York suddenly had an easy way to escape to the lakes and boarding houses of Sussex County. Sparta became a genuine summer destination, and the population swelled every warm season with vacationers seeking fresh air and cooler temperatures.

Passenger service eventually ended in 1935, but by then the damage was done in the best possible way - Sparta was already well established as a desirable place to put down roots. The railroad brought the people, and the people never really left. Many of the lakeside communities that flourish today, including Lake Mohawk, trace their appeal directly back to that era of rail-driven discovery.

Sparta Real Estate Snapshot

🏡 Sparta Real Estate Snapshot - March 2026

🏡 Sparta Real Estate - Spring 2026 Market Watch

Spring has officially arrived in the New Jersey housing market - and the timing couldn't be better for Sparta homeowners. Statewide, the median home price reached $531,000 in February 2026, up 4.8% year over year, with new listings jumping nearly 15% as sellers rushed to capitalize on peak buying season. Mortgage rates have settled near 6.1% - the most predictable they've been in three years - giving buyers more confidence to act.

For Sparta specifically, that means more motivated buyers entering the market right now. Real estate data consistently shows that homes listed in March and April sell faster and closer to asking price than at any other time of year. If you've been thinking about listing, the window is open.

One standout stat from the statewide data: homes priced within 3% of market value are selling in an average of 38 days. Homes priced more than 5% above market are averaging 82 days and often sell below what they would have fetched with smarter initial pricing. Price it right from day one - that's the spring 2026 message.

Spotlight Recipe of the Week

Sheet Pan Lemon Garlic Chicken with Spring Vegetables

Why This Recipe This Week: Tuesday opens sunny and mild at 54°F - a perfect spring day. But by Friday we're looking at 100% rain and a cool weekend ahead. This week calls for something that celebrates the sunny start while keeping you ready for the cozy back half. A sheet pan lemon garlic chicken with roasted spring vegetables does exactly that - bright, seasonal, effortless, and it makes the whole house smell like spring even when it's grey outside.

Cook this Wednesday or Thursday - the sunny days - before the rain moves in Friday.

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
  • 1 lb baby potatoes, halved
  • 2 cups asparagus, trimmed
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • Juice and zest of 1 large lemon
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F. In a large bowl combine olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest, garlic, oregano, thyme, salt and pepper.
  2. Toss potatoes in the mixture and spread on a large sheet pan. Roast 15 minutes.
  3. Push potatoes to the edges. Add chicken thighs to the center, skin side up. Brush with remaining marinade.
  4. Roast 20 minutes. Add asparagus and cherry tomatoes to the pan around the chicken.
  5. Roast another 15-20 minutes until chicken skin is golden and internal temp reaches 165°F.
  6. Garnish with fresh parsley and extra lemon squeeze. Serve straight from the pan.

Vibe Pairing: Something warm and optimistic - Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, or a breezy acoustic playlist. Dinner on Wednesday with the windows cracked and that first hint of real spring air coming through.

Mid-Week Reset: Cook Wednesday, order from The Hungry Hearth on Thursday - Amy's delivering and you've earned the night off. Then if the rainy weekend has you needing to reset body and spirit, Haven of Harmony has exactly what you need. Massage, energy healing, yoga - consider this your permission slip.

Fur-ever Friend Feature

Adopt Me Today!
Proudly Partnering with Father John's Animal House

🐶 Meet Hazel - Your New Fur-ever Friend!

Adopt Hazel Today! 🐾 🧡

Breed: Labrador Retriever - Pit Bull Terrier mix

Age: 3 years young

♀ Gender: Female

🏥 Health: Spayed/Neutered, Vaccinated, Microchipped

💉 ✨ Temperament: Friendly, social, energetic - needs patience in a new home 🐾

Meet Hazel! 🌟

Hazel's story is one that tugs at the heart and calls for exactly the right family to step forward. This beautiful 60-pound girl first came to Father John's, found what looked like her forever home - and then had to come back. Not because anything was wrong with her, but because she simply struggled to adjust to a new space. It happens. And it doesn't define who she is.

What does define Hazel? The way she lights up meeting new people. The enthusiasm she brings to every interaction with other dogs. The fact that she's only three years old and has a whole life of loyalty and love ahead of her. Before her adoption she came to Father John's after her owner was forced to re-home her when a landlord changed the rules on animals - through no fault of her own, this girl has had more than her share of upheaval.

What Hazel needs now is a patient family who understands that settling in takes time - a home where she can decompress, figure out the new rhythms, and remember what it feels like to belong somewhere for good. She has every quality of a wonderful companion. She just needs someone willing to give her the space and grace to show it.

She's been patient enough. Now it's time for someone to be patient for her.

Household Hint of the Week!

Spring Gutter Check - Before the Rain Hits Friday

With 100% rain in the forecast for Friday, this week is a perfect reminder to take 10 minutes and check your downspouts are flowing freely. Run a garden hose from the top - if water backs up instead of draining cleanly away from the foundation, clear the blockage now before Friday's soaking makes it your problem. A $3 flush now beats a wet basement cleanup later.
