The Zoo That Started in a Country Store

In 1927, Ralph and Elizabeth Space bought a quarter-acre in the hamlet of Beemerville and opened a small country store. Ralph had made his living trapping wild animals for the State of New Jersey and raising foxes, and neighbors began bringing him animals or he caught them alive. His first zoo permit is dated 1928, and the attraction began life as the Blue Ridge Wild Animal Farm and Indian Museum.

The family bought neighboring farms, including a dairy farm in 1939, and the property grew to 435 acres under the name Space Farms. Today the museum holds tens of thousands of artifacts, from antique cars and sleighs to clocks and dolls. The Space family, now in its fourth generation, still runs it.

Space Farms is celebrating 99 years, so next year brings a big one. It’s open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM through Nov. 1, so there’s still time for a fall visit.

Word of the Week

Gossamer (GOSS-uh-mer) - noun and adjective

What does it mean?
As a noun, it’s the fine, silky film of spider webs that drifts through the air on still, clear days. As an adjective, it describes something extremely light, delicate or sheer.

Where does it come from?
It comes from Middle English gossomer, built from “goose” and “summer.” That “goose summer” was a mild spell in late autumn.

Did you know?
The word first named that warm autumn stretch and later shifted to the floating cobwebs seen then. Nobody is sure whether the webs reminded people of goose down or were simply most noticeable that time of year.

Use it in a sentence:
“Morning fog lay across Lake Mohawk like a gossamer veil, lifting just in time for the sun to catch the maples.”

Answer to Trivia Question

Question: Did you know there is a volcano in Sussex County?
Near the little hamlet of Beemerville in Wantage Township sits Rutan Hill. What is the hill, geologically speaking?

Answer: It is the eroded remains of an ancient volcano, the last bit of plumbing left from a fiery chapter roughly 420 million years ago (estimates run from about 420 to 440 million). The volcano is long extinct. Time wore away the cone itself, and the hill sits on private land, so it’s a “look from the road” kind of landmark.
