Our Local News:

Sparta Township faces a significant election on November 4 as longtime residents Michael Sylvester and Molly Whilesmith vie for a single Township Council seat, following Dan Chiarielloโ€™s resignation in April.

Michael Sylvester, former planning and zoning board member, calls for fiscal discipline and increased economic growth. He criticizes recent financial decisions and pledges to tackle the budget deficit, improve staff retention, and bring his land-use expertise to council business.

Molly Whilesmith, a former mayor and council member, opposes the proposed mega-warehouse and flags potential traffic issues along Route 15. She promises to respect the results of the cannabis referendum and aims to rebuild the townshipโ€™s financial surplus by limiting expenses, highlighting her experience in steady governance.

Residents will also vote on whether to allow cannabis sales near schools - a hot-button issue shaping local priorities and community direction.

The U.S. Armyโ€™s restructuring proposal may shift around 1,000 jobs from Picatinny Arsenal to sites across the country, stirring concern among New Jersey leaders.

Assemblywoman Aura Dunn warned that such a move could threaten military innovation and local employment, as well as national security.

The entire New Jersey congressional delegation recently urged Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll to recognize Picatinnyโ€™s unique value to national defense.

The lawmakers stressed that no other U.S. installation matches Picatinnyโ€™s specialized expertise in arms and ammunitionโ€”relocating these missions could reduce the quality and effectiveness of weapons for U.S. soldiers.

While a final decision is pending, the Army acknowledged these concerns and confirmed theyโ€™ll be part of the ongoing review.

Picatinny Arsenal remains vital to Morris Countyโ€™s economy, employing over 6,000 people and partnering closely with local agencies.

Fur-ever Friend Feature:

Adopt Me Today!

Meet Turmeric: Your New Best Friend Awaits!

Oh, sweet Turmeric, a gorgeous Domestic Short Hair Tortoiseshell, is ready to steal your heart and fill your home with love! At just 2 1/2 years young, this spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped adult female is a bundle of unique charm, waiting for her fur-ever family to shower her with affection. With her stunning coat and endearing quirks, sheโ€™s a treasure just waiting to be discovered!

Turmericโ€™s journey hasnโ€™t been the easiestโ€”she and her darling sister Cayenne came to us after their previous owner, who was handicapped, sadly lost his home. These sweet girls have been passed around a bit, but weโ€™re on a mission to change that. Turmeric deserves a loving, permanent home where she can finally feel safe and cherishedโ€”and we know youโ€™re out there, ready to be her hero!

Now, letโ€™s talk about this adorable shy girl. Turmeric wasnโ€™t properly socialized as a kitten, so sheโ€™s a little reserved at first, but oh, the progress sheโ€™s made with our staff and volunteers is nothing short of inspiring! Sheโ€™s blossoming day by day, and with a patient, loving adopter like you, sheโ€™ll continue to shine. Imagine the joy of earning her trustโ€”especially since sheโ€™s super food-motivated! A little treat, and youโ€™ll be well on your way to winning her heart. Before long, sheโ€™ll be letting you pet her and showing off her playful side with her favorite catnip toys. How fun is that?

Turmeric gets along wonderfully with other cats and would absolutely adore going home with her sister Cayenne if youโ€™re looking to double the love. But even if itโ€™s just her, as long as thereโ€™s another feline friend to show her the ropes, sheโ€™ll be purring with happiness. Oh, and did we mention her unique little head tilt? Itโ€™s just part of her one-of-a-kind charmโ€”our vet found no medical reason for it; sheโ€™s simply special! While she might be happiest in a quieter home without dogs or young kids, Turmeric has surprised us before, and we canโ€™t wait to see how sheโ€™ll surprise you too.
