On October 1, 2025, the Sparta Planning Board granted approval for two new establishments on Lafayette Road: a Turkish restaurant and the adjacent Sparta Smoke Shop.
This decision followed extensive deliberations addressing community concerns about potential traffic congestion and parking limitations in the area.
The applicants were represented by attorney Daniel Benador of the law firm Askin and Hooker, who provided testimony regarding the property's layout and operational changes.
Notably, a prior submission by an attorney potentially unlicensed in New Jersey was scrutinized, with the board keen to ensure the integrity of the application process.
The current attorney's involvement was deemed sufficient to move forward, with the board focusing on the merits of the application itself.
During the meeting, residents expressed mixed reactions.
Some welcomed the new dining option, while others voiced concerns about increased traffic and parking challenges.
The businesses are set to occupy spaces previously held by Poppa Roni's and a Mexican restaurant.
To address these issues, the board imposed conditions on the approvals, including requirements for signage plans, septic system inspections, and adherence to lighting and operational hour restrictions.
These measures aim to ensure that the new businesses operate within community safety and regulatory standards.
The Sparta Planning Board convenes at the Sparta Municipal Building, 65 Main Street, Sparta, NJ 07871.
