Sparta Township Council Meeting Tuesday March 11, 2025

The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced that Route I-80 eastbound will remain closed for another two months due to ongoing emergency repairs between Exit 34 and the bridge over Route 15 in Wharton. This situation is causing significant disruptions for commuters and local businesses. The current drilling and grouting operations intended to stabilize the roadway are now expected to take an additional four weeks to complete.

To alleviate traffic issues, NJDOT is planning to construct a crossover that will redirect one lane of eastbound traffic onto the westbound lane, reducing westbound traffic to two lanes and allowing large commercial vehicles to avoid detours. Construction on this crossover is anticipated to take about two weeks once plans are finalized.

The ongoing projects require careful precision, and after addressing the sinkhole, NJDOT will conduct quality assurance testing to ensure the roadway's stability. Additionally, a monitoring system will be installed to track conditions during repairs, followed by paving to create a safe driving surface.
