Short Story of the Week "Art of Courage" by Randi Lace |
In the bustling halls of Maplewood Middle School, a shy girl named Mia often kept to herself, clutching her books tightly as she navigated her way through the crowds. She loved to draw and dreamed of becoming an artist one day, but the kids in her class were not kind. A group of bullies, led by a boisterous boy named Jake, would taunt her daily, calling her “Weirdo” and mocking her drawings. One afternoon, as Mia sat alone during lunch, her heart sank when she saw Jake approaching with his friends. She clutched her pencil, wishing she could disappear. They sneered and began to laugh, making fun of the sketch she had drawn of a sunny landscape. “Look at this! What a loser!” Jake shouted, crumpling her drawing and tossing it in the air. Mia’s cheeks burned with embarrassment, and tears pooled in her eyes. But before she could retreat, something unexpected happened. A girl named Emma, who had always been quiet but observant, stood up from her table. “Stop it, Jake!” Emma’s voice rang out, clear and firm. “Bullying someone doesn't make you cool; it just shows how insecure you are.” The laughter faded, and the other students watched in surprise. Jake’s face turned a shade of red, but he backed off, surprised by Emma’s courage. Mia, still shaken, felt a flicker of hope. From that day, Emma sat with Mia during lunch, encouraging her to share her drawings. Slowly, with Emma’s support, Mia gained confidence. They started a small art club together, inviting others to join and create. Weeks later, during an art show at the school, Mia’s work was displayed alongside others. She felt proud, and when she looked out at the crowd, she spotted Jake, standing silently, no longer laughing but watching with a mix of regret and admiration. Moral of the Story: Kindness and courage can break the cycle of bullying, lifting those who are hurt and inspiring others to find their strength. When you stand up for someone in need, you not only help them but often change the heart of the bully as well. |
