"Insect Pollinators and Their Side Hustles": Guest Speaker Rick Le Duc at the Sussex County Bird Club's May Meeting

The Sussex County Bird Club's May meeting will feature guest speaker Rick Le Duc discussing "Insect Pollinators and Their Side Hustles." Le Duc will explore the various types of pollinator insects and their critical roles in the ecosystem.

The meeting will take place on Friday, May 16th, 2025 at 7:15 PM at the Sparta Ambulance Squad Building in Sparta, NJ, or via Zoom for those who prefer to attend virtually.

The event is open to the public, and attendees can request a Zoom link by emailing info@sussexcountybirdclub.org.

Refreshments will be provided.

Triumphant Tides: Pope John Dominates Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex (H/W/S) Tournament While Sparta Showcases Tenacity!

Pope John Boys Lacrosse Championship:

  • The Pope John XXIII Regional High School boys lacrosse team, led by Mikey RamirezTravis Heller, and Jack Gallucci, achieved victory over Voorhees with a score of 13-4 in the H/W/S Tournament final, securing their third title in five years. Mikey Ramirez was named the tournament MVP for the second time in three seasons, contributing two goals and an assist. Travis Heller added two goals, an assist, and seven ground balls, while Jack Gallucci recorded one goal and three assists.

Sparta Girls Lacrosse Performance:

  • The Sparta High School girls lacrosse team faced defeat against Hunterdon Central in the H/W/S Tournament finals, with a final score of 13-6. Moira Sweeney scored three times, Joey Roque connected for two goals, and Uma Kowalski contributed a goal and an assist. It was a strong season for Kowalski, who has recorded 67 goals and 17 assists, while Sweeney tallied 42 goals and 14 assists.

Sparta Baseball Team's Struggle:

  • In a remarkable game despite a loss to Warren Hills, the Sparta baseball team scored 14 runs but ultimately succumbed with a score of 18-14 in the second round of the H/W/S Tournament. Key players included Branden Woletz, who went 1-for-3 with four RBIs, Dylan Furtado (1-for-4 with two RBIs), Kayden Daly (2-for-2 with three runs), and Shane Hoover (2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI).

Sparta Softball Team's Semifinal Exit:

  • The Sparta softball team, seeded 13th, lost 5-1 to Hunterdon Central in the semifinals of the H/W/S Tournament. Kiernan Moore scored in the third inning, and Abigail Connors contributed with a double. Alexis Arpino excelled at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.

Sparta Boys Lacrosse Performance:

  • The Sparta boys lacrosse team was defeated by Pope John in the H/W/S Tournament semifinals, with a score of 14-6. Key performances came from Jace Stiansen, who had two goals and an assist, and Matt Ciarelli, who also scored twice. Danny Westervelt and Lucas Brown each added one goal, and goalkeeper Jake Alliegro made 18 saves.

Boys Golf Tournament Results:

  • The Sparta boys golf team finished fourth at the H/W/S Tournament, led by Calvin Kirchner, who tied for fourth with a score of 75, and John Ferraro, who shot a 79. Other contributors included Ryan Grycuk (81) and Matt Sturchio (93), bringing the team to a total of 328 strokes.

Track Team Success:

  • Le-Shem Little had an outstanding performance at the H/W/S Championships, winning the 100-meter dash (10.97 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (22.58 seconds), while also placing third in the 400-meter dash (51.71 seconds). Isabella Frattura also shone, winning the javelin event (134-10 feet) and placing fourth in the high jump. Celia Rossettini and Ava Barone participated actively in the distances, finishing sixth and ninth in the 3,200-meter run, respectively.
