Sparta Wins Court Battle to Protect Route 15 Cornfield Sparta Township has prevailed in a Superior Court ruling that keeps the Route 15 cornfield zoned exclusively for agriculture and outdoor recreation, blocking a developer's housing proposal. The judge sided with the township and its residents, who argued the development would worsen traffic, threaten drinking water, and chip away at Sparta's rural identity. Officials say the decision reaffirms their authority to shape how land in the community is used. VFW Launches Record $31,000 Ralph Rojas Scholarship Fund Sparta VFW Post 7248 is offering 12 scholarships totaling $31,000 for the 2026-27 academic year - the largest total in the program's history. Sussex County veterans, their dependents, active-duty personnel at Picatinny Arsenal, and ROTC or service academy students are all eligible to apply. The deadline is April 20, with an awards ceremony scheduled for May 20 at the Sparta VFW. Sparta School District Navigates Tough Budget Season Superintendent Matt Beck and Business Administrator Barbara Decker presented the tentative 2026-27 school budget to the Board of Education on March 17. Like districts across New Jersey, Sparta is facing state funding pressures that are putting real strain on local resources and programming decisions heading into the next school year. United Ice Hockey Repeats as NJSIAA Public Co-Op State Champions Sparta High School skaters helped power the United co-op hockey team to a back-to-back NJSIAA Public Co-Op state championship at the Prudential Center in Newark. Junior Braydon Sisco's hat trick led a 5-1 win over North Hunterdon, capping a 16-7-2 season. The United roster draws talent from Sparta, Kinnelon, and Jefferson - and the state's top co-op title stays right here in our backyard. Prescribed Burns Underway Near Sussex County Wildlife Area The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has been conducting intentional controlled burns at the perimeter of Whittingham State Wildlife Management Area in Fredon Township, between Routes 94 and 206. Residents who spot smoke in the area can rest easy - these are carefully managed operations, not wildfires. The burns are part of routine land management to reduce wildfire risk and improve habitat. Sussex County 250th Anniversary Celebration Set for June 7 Sussex County will host a community-wide America 250 celebration on June 7 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds, with activities planned for residents of all ages. Sparta's own RevolutionNJ committee is also actively inviting families with ancestral ties to the American Revolution to come forward and share their stories as part of the national commemoration effort. Two Sparta Residents Plead Guilty in Federal Case Sparta residents Joseph Passalaqua and Raymond Pirrello Jr. pleaded guilty to three federal counts before Judge Kiyo Matsumoto in Brooklyn on March 3, 2026. The change-of-plea hearing is part of an ongoing federal proceeding. Both men face a potential maximum sentence of 45 years in prison. No further sentencing date has been announced. |

💡 Did You Know?
Happy Birthday, Sparta! The Township Turns 181 This April Here's a fun one timed almost perfectly to this week's newsletter: Sparta Township was officially incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 14, 1845. It was carved out of portions of Byram, Frankford, Hardyston, and what was then Newton Township. The new township took its name from an existing community already calling itself Sparta - a name almost certainly inspired by the ancient Greek city-state.
But the community's roots go back much further. The first permanent settlers arrived around 1778, when Robert Ogden and his wife built a home and iron forge here, naming the property "Sparta." That forge kicked off what would become a small but notable anchor-making industry - by 1836, Henry Decker and others were producing anchors right here in town, a trade that lasted until the end of the Civil War.
From iron forges to zinc mining to Thomas Edison's ambitious (and ultimately failed) ore-milling operation on Sparta Mountain, this township has been home to some truly remarkable chapters of American industrial history. Not bad for a place that started as a family farm and a forge.

Spotlight Recipe of the Week |
Lemon Herb Chicken Orzo Soup |
Why This Recipe This Week: With Tuesday bringing warm showers and Wednesday dropping temps into the 40s overnight, this week is textbook "cozy transition" weather. You want something that feels like spring arrived but hasn't quite committed yet. A hearty, bright lemon herb chicken orzo soup hits that mark perfectly - colorful enough to feel optimistic about the season, warm enough to chase the Wednesday chill.
Cook this one on Wednesday - it actually gets better as it sits, so leftovers are a gift.
Serves: 6 Ingredients:
Instructions:
Vibe Pairing: Something acoustic and unhurried - James Taylor, early Norah Jones, or a lo-fi spring playlist. Light a candle or two, open the window just a crack, and let the lemon steam do the rest.
Mid-Week Reset: Soup on Wednesday sets you up beautifully for the second half of the week. Then let Thursday take care of itself - that's what The Hungry Hearth is for. Amy delivers Tuesday and Thursday, so check out this week's menu and give yourself the night off. And if the week has you craving a real reset for body and soul, Haven of Harmony in Sparta offers massage, energy healing, yoga, and retreats that will melt the rest of the week right off you. |

🐱 Meet Mufasa - Your New Fur-ever Friend!
Adopt Mufasa Today! 🐾 🧡
Breed: Domestic Short Hair Age: 13 years young ♂ Gender: Male 🏥 Health: Spayed/Neutered, Vaccinated, Microchipped 💉 ✨ Temperament: Gentle, affectionate, food-motivated, loves soft pets and quiet company 🐾
Meet Mufasa! 🌟
Mufasa came to Father John's under the most bittersweet of circumstances - his elderly owner went to assisted living, and this devoted, deeply loved cat suddenly found himself without his person and without his home. After a lifetime of being cared for, he now needs someone to step up and be his person in return.
He's a gentleman in every sense of the word. Mufasa adores gentle pets, melts for Temptation chicken treats, and gets along beautifully with other cats. He can be a little skittish around loud or sudden noises - which is completely understandable for a senior cat adjusting to shelter life after knowing only one home his whole life. The team at Father John's says he has come an incredibly long way since arriving, welcoming the attention of staff and volunteers with quiet gratitude.
Mufasa recently had dental work done and is down to just one tooth - but he doesn't let that slow him down one bit. He's been feeling better and better each day. What he needs now is a calm, patient home - preferably without dogs or very young children - where someone will give him the time and space to settle in and remember what it feels like to be truly at home again. He loves the company of other cats and would thrive with a feline companion.
At 13, Mufasa has seen a lot of life. He deserves to spend every one of his remaining days feeling warm, safe, and loved.

Household Hint of the Week! |
Spring Drain Rescue After a wet winter, your gutters and downspouts have likely taken a beating. Before the April showers pile on, take 15 minutes this week to flush your downspouts with a garden hose. If water backs up instead of flowing through, you've got a clog that could send water toward your foundation. A $5 plumber's snake or even a strong burst from the hose nozzle will usually clear it. Your basement will thank you. |
