Sparta & Sussex County History Bite

When Thomas Edison Tried to Mine Sparta Mountain

Most people know Thomas Edison as the man who lit up the world. Fewer know he spent nearly a decade and a fortune trying to pull iron ore out of the hills just outside Sparta.

In 1889, Edison completed one of the largest ore-crushing mills ever built in the United States, located near Ogdensburg - right in Sparta's backyard. The facility housed three giant electromagnets designed to separate iron ore from low-grade rock, and was built to crush up to 1,200 tons of material every single day. Edison believed he could solve America's growing iron scarcity by processing the vast deposits of poor-quality ore sitting in Sussex County's hills. At its peak, the operation employed around 500 workers.

The project was classic Edison - bold, visionary, relentlessly pursued. But it was undone not by technology, but by economics. When rich iron deposits were discovered in Minnesota, shipping costs dropped and Edison's Sussex County operation simply couldn't compete. He walked away around 1900, having lost everything he put into it. Today, the legacy of that era lives on at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in nearby Ogdensburg, where visitors can explore the underground tunnels and learn about the region's remarkable industrial past.

Fur-ever Friend Feature

Adopt Me Today!
Proudly Partnering with Father John's Animal House

🐾 Meet Darla - Your New Fur-ever Friend!

Adopt Darla Today! 🐾 🧡

Breed: German Shepherd Dog

Age: About 4 years young

Female

Health: Spayed, Vaccinated, Microchipped

Temperament: Gentle and polite with people, good with dogs on leash

Meet Darla! 🌟

Darla arrived at Father John's Animal Haven with no fanfare and no one to speak for her. She was found roaming a horse farm in the area - a petite Shepherd at 48 pounds, thin and unclaimed. No one ever came looking. No one ever came back. She had a collar but no home, a face full of curiosity and nowhere to belong.

The staff at Father John's quickly discovered that underneath that uncertainty was a dog with genuine sweetness. Darla is polite when meeting new people - not pushy, not skittish, just quietly hopeful. She gets along well with other dogs and moves through the world with a calm, steady presence. She's the kind of dog who will settle beside you on a quiet evening like she's always been there.

At about 4 years old, Darla is just hitting her stride. She's past the chaos of puppyhood, she knows how to be a dog - she just needs someone to show her what it means to be loved. She still needs to gain a little weight, but she's healthy and ready. There's nothing holding her back except a door that hasn't opened yet.

She deserves a warm home to spend every one of those days feeling loved.

Household Hint of the Week!

Beat the Heat Without Cranking the AC

Before you reach for the thermostat this week, try this first: close your blinds and curtains on south and west facing windows before 10 a.m.

Up to 30% of unwanted heat enters your home through glass.

Keeping those covered during peak sun hours can drop your indoor temp by several degrees - no electricity required. Pair it with a fan pointed outward in a window at night once it cools down Wednesday, and you'll sleep better and save on your energy bill.

Simple, free, and it actually works.

Answer
: C) 1,200 tons - Edison's massive facility near Ogdensburg was designed to crush and process up to 1,200 tons of iron ore per day using giant electromagnets. Despite the ambition, technical problems plagued the operation and he ultimately abandoned it when Minnesota iron made the project uneconomical.
