Township news Snippets and upcoming meetings

1. Township Council Honors Firefighters, Proclaims Donate Life Month At its April 14 meeting, the Sparta Township Council issued a series of proclamations covering two important community causes. Council members designated April as Donate Life Month, urging residents to consider registering as organ, tissue, and eye donors. The council also recognized the Sparta Fire Department for its swift response to a brush fire that started as a bonfire and spread up a mountain. Deputy Mayor Mike Sylvester praised Fire Chief Ryan Odom and his crew for keeping the situation from becoming far more serious. The week of April 26 through May 3 was officially proclaimed "Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters" week.

2. New Trail Signs Installed at Sparta Glen Hikers heading to Sparta Glen and Younkers Landing will now find it much easier to navigate, thanks to two newly installed trail information signs funded by a Sustainable Jersey / PSEG Foundation grant. The Sparta Trails Committee placed one sign at the Younkers Landing trailhead off Holland Circle and another at the Sparta Glen parking area off Glen Road. The signs detail trail routes, distances, and difficulty levels - a welcome upgrade for both regulars and first-time visitors to Sparta's beautiful trail system.

3. Sparta Wins Court Battle to Protect Route 15 Cornfield Sparta Township scored a significant legal victory when a Superior Court judge upheld Ordinance 25-06, blocking a proposed housing development on the Route 15 cornfield. The ruling keeps the property zoned exclusively for agriculture and outdoor recreation, honoring concerns raised by residents about traffic congestion, drinking water protection, and Sparta's rural character. Township officials called the decision an affirmation of their authority to adapt zoning to the community's evolving needs.

Sparta & Sussex County History Bite

The Day the Valley Became a Lake

Before Lake Mohawk was the beloved centerpiece of Sparta's community life, it was a quiet, lush valley called Brogden Meadow - a hollow nestled between the rising hills of Sussex County. The story of how it became one of New Jersey's most iconic private lakes begins with two visionaries: developers Arthur D. Crane and Herbert Closs, who looked at that valley and imagined something extraordinary. Their plan was to dam the river, flood the meadow, and build a resort community around the new lake.

Work began in 1926 when the north-flowing Wallkill River was dammed. The construction effort was immense - crews worked by hand, and a young real estate agent named Russell Beierle reportedly issued weekly paychecks to workers right at what is now White Deer Plaza. By March 17, 1928 - nearly two years after breaking ground - the first waters crept over the spillway. Brogden Meadow was gone, replaced by a three-and-a-half mile lake spanning roughly 800 acres.

The community surrounding the lake was formally dedicated on June 26, 1927 - even before the lake was fully filled - and was nicknamed "the Reservation." White Deer Plaza was named in honor of Princess White Deer, a Mohawk princess who attended the opening ceremonies.

In 1988, the Plaza, Country Club, and surrounding buildings were added to the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places for their distinctive "Lake Mohawk Tudor" architectural style - the same charming character that makes the boardwalk feel timeless today.

Spotlight Recipe of the Week

Brown Butter Honey Garlic Salmon

with Crispy Capers

Why this recipe is perfect this week: Tuesday opens sunny and mild - perfect for picking up fresh salmon. By Wednesday evening the clouds roll in and the temperature drops just enough to make you want something warm, impressive, and a little unexpected. This is that recipe. The combination of nutty brown butter, floral honey, sharp garlic, and salty fried capers sounds like it shouldn't work - and then it absolutely does.

Ingredients (serves 4):

  • 4 salmon fillets (about 6 oz each)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons capers, drained and patted very dry
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges
  • Fresh parsley, roughly chopped

Instructions:

  1. Pat salmon fillets completely dry with paper towels. Season generously with salt and pepper on both sides.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place salmon skin-side up and cook 4 minutes without touching. Flip and cook another 3 minutes. Remove to a plate.
  3. Reduce heat to medium. Add capers to the same pan - they'll pop and sizzle. Let them fry 2-3 minutes until crispy and slightly open like little flowers. Remove and set aside.
  4. Add butter to the pan. Swirl constantly over medium heat - it will foam, then turn golden, then smell like toasted hazelnuts. That's your moment. About 3 minutes.
  5. Add garlic slices immediately - they'll sizzle fast. Cook 60 seconds until just golden.
  6. Remove pan from heat. Stir in honey and red pepper flakes. It will bubble dramatically. That's perfect.
  7. Return salmon to the pan. Spoon the sauce over each fillet repeatedly for 30 seconds.
  8. Top with crispy capers and fresh parsley. Serve immediately with lemon wedges.

Why it works: Brown butter is regular butter taken one step further - past melted, past foamy, into something nutty and almost caramel-like. Honey rounds it out. The capers fry into tiny salty crunch bombs that cut right through the richness. It tastes like a restaurant made it. Your kitchen will smell unbelievable.

Vibe Pairing: Miles Davis or Sade on low. A glass of chilled Pinot Gris. Candlelight optional but honestly - why not. You earned it.

Wednesday is your cook night for this one - 20 minutes start to finish. Then Thursday when the rain settles in and the couch is calling, let The Hungry Hearth handle dinner. Amy delivers right to your door every Thursday. thehungryhearth.com

Fur-ever Friend Feature

Adopt Me Today!
Proudly Partnering with Father John's Animal House

🐶 Meet Bella - Your New Fur-ever Friend!

Adopt Bella Today! 🐾 🧡

Breed: American Bulldog

Age: 7 years young

🐾 Gender: Female

🏥 Health: Spayed/Neutered, Vaccinated, Microchipped 💉 ✨ Temperament: Calm, leash-trained, great with kids and male dogs 🐾

Meet Bella! 🌟

Bella arrived at Father John's Animal Haven through no fault of her own. Her family loved her - they simply found themselves no longer able to care for her. At seven years old and about 53 pounds, she carries the quiet confidence of a dog who has known real love and is ready to give it all back. She's not a puppy bouncing off the walls. She's something better - steady, warm, and grateful for every good moment.

Walk her on a leash and she's a dream - calm, attentive, and well-mannered. But get her a little excited and she does the most adorable thing: a tiny, happy little hop that will absolutely make your day every single time you walk through the door. She lived with children and thrived alongside a male dog in her previous home. She can be a little bossy with other female dogs, but honestly - she just knows what she wants. And what she wants is a soft place to land and a family to call her own.

Seven years isn't the end of Bella's story. It might just be the beginning of the best chapter. Senior dogs love deeply, settle quickly, and have a gift for reminding you to slow down and enjoy the simple things. She's calm enough for a quieter household but joyful enough to brighten any room she walks into.

Bella deserves a warm home to spend every one of those days feeling safe, loved, and completely at home.

Household Hint of the Week!

Revive Muddy Spring Doormats in Minutes

With spring showers comes mud - and muddy mats getting tracked through the front door. Instead of fighting wet, caked-on dirt right away, let the mat dry completely first. Once it's fully dry, the dirt shakes and brushes right off. Then take it outside, spray it down with a hose, scrub briefly with dish soap and a stiff brush, and let it air dry in the sun.

The dry-first approach cuts your scrubbing time in half and leaves the mat looking nearly new.
