Ice hockey champs, court win for the cornfield, a survivor cat, and your busiest Saturday yet

Sparta Avenue has reopened after a serious crash early Monday caused utility poles to fall and live wires to block the roadway.

The resulting outage created major traffic delays throughout the township for much of the morning.

Sparta Police and utility crews responded quickly, working together to secure the scene and restore safe passage for local drivers.

Those who detoured their commutes can now resume normal routes, though officials urge ongoing caution as clean-up and repairs continue.

Thanks go to the first responders and utility workers whose swift response helped restore order and safety in the community.

How a Flooded Meadow Became New Jersey's Most Famous Lake Community

Before Lake Mohawk, there was silence. The valley now filled with sparkling water was once called Brogden Meadow - a sweeping 2,300-acre expanse of farmland named after a colonial judge who had settled there, fed by the northward-flowing Wallkill River and rimmed by wooded ridges.

In 1925, a developer named Arthur D. Crane saw something no one else did: the perfect bowl for a private lake resort community. The Crane Company purchased a 25,000-acre reservation in 1925, and the dam stemming the waters of the Wallkill River was completed on August 26, 1926. Then came two years of engineering, clearing, and waiting. On March 17, 1928 - 98 years ago this week — the first waters crept over the spillway, and Lake Mohawk was born.

The community known as the "Reservation" was officially dedicated on June 26, 1927, and White Deer Plaza was named in honor of Princess White Deer, a Mohawk princess who attended the opening ceremony and pledged her blessing to the community.

The architecture that gives Lake Mohawk its unmistakable character - those stucco facades, half-timbered gables, and variegated slate roofs - was no accident. Designers created a style now known as "Lake Mohawk Tudor," a blend of Tudor, English Cottage, and German Baronial influences. The distinctive architecture of the town center and many homes was a major factor in Lake Mohawk's listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

What began as a summer retreat for vacationing New Yorkers became something far more enduring: one of New Jersey's most sought-after year-round communities - and the backyard many of you call home.

Sparta Real Estate Snapshot

🏡 Sparta Real Estate Snapshot — March 17, 2026

Spring is arriving early in the Sparta housing market - and so are buyers.

With the traditional spring selling season now underway, active inventory in Sparta sits at approximately 143 homes currently listed, with a median list price of $569,000. That range stretches wide - from entry-level properties in the low $200s to lakefront and luxury estates topping $3.9 million - reflecting the diversity of housing stock across Sparta's 11 private lake communities and surrounding neighborhoods.

The median sale price per square foot in the 07871 zip code is currently $317, up 5% from a year ago - a quiet but meaningful indicator that per-foot value is climbing even as overall list prices normalize. For homeowners watching their equity, that's a number worth noting.

At the broader New Jersey level, the market continues to tilt toward sellers. Statewide inventory sits at just 1.59 months of supply, giving sellers substantial pricing authority and drawing competitive offers. Sparta's own tight inventory mirrors that dynamic - there simply aren't enough homes to meet demand, which continues to put a floor under prices.

As for who's buying: the story in this region continues to be driven by buyers relocating from the New York metro area seeking more space, strong schools, and the kind of lakeside quality of life that's hard to find closer to the city. Mortgage rates are expected to stay in the 5.8%–6.5% range through 2026, meaning today's rate environment is increasingly the new normal - and buyers who've been waiting are starting to move.

For Sparta homeowners, the equity picture remains healthy. If you've been curious what your home is worth in today's market, spring is the right time to find out.

Our Local Weather

☁️ Our Local Weather — Week of March 17–23, 2026

March is doing what March does best — keeping us guessing. After a mild stretch that had us thinking spring was here to stay, the week ahead brings a cold reset. Bundle up, Sparta.

Tuesday, March 17 - 55° / 33° Cloudy and noticeably cooler than the weekend. A light jacket kind of day - nothing dramatic, but the warmth is gone.

Wednesday, March 18 - 45° / 28° Temperatures continue to drop and skies stay mostly cloudy. Feel more like late January than mid-March. Good day to stay in and get things done.

Thursday, March 19 - 55° / 35° A modest rebound with some sunshine trying to peek through. Still cool, but more comfortable. Good news for anyone with outdoor plans.

Friday, March 20 - 51° / 30° The first day of spring - and nature has a sense of humor. A storm system is expected to bring a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain into Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Exercise caution if you're heading out for the weekend.

Saturday, March 21 - 49° / 30° Lingering wintry mix possible in the morning before gradual clearing. Roads could be slick early - give yourself extra time.

Sunday, March 22 - 56° / 38° Clearing skies and a welcome return to more seasonal temperatures. A decent end to the weekend if you can wait it out.

Monday, March 23 - 53° / 35° Mostly cloudy but dry. A reasonable start to the following week.

🌨️ Heads up: A winter weather system is expected to impact the area Friday afternoon into Saturday morning.

Spotlight Recipe of the Week

Rustic Beef & White Bean Stew
 with Herb Butter Bread

Your First-Day-of-Spring Storm Survival Dinner — just when you thought winter was done, Sparta has one more trick up its sleeve. ❄️

Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds beef stew meat, cut into cubes
  • 2 cans white beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 3 carrots, sliced into rounds
  • 2 stalks celery, sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 crusty baguette or bread loaf
  • 3 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced (for butter)

Steps

1 Sear the beef: Pat stew meat dry and season generously with salt and pepper. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a heavy pot or Dutch oven over medium-high. Sear beef in batches until deeply browned on all sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Don't rush this - that brown crust is where all the flavor lives. Remove beef and set aside.

2 Build the base: In the same pot, sauté 1 large yellow onion, diced, 3 carrots, sliced into rounds, and 2 stalks celery, sliced over medium heat for 5 minutes until softened. Add 4 garlic cloves, minced and 2 tablespoons tomato paste, stir for 1 minute until fragrant.

3 Add everything in: Return beef to the pot. Pour in 1 can diced tomatoes, 3 cups beef broth, 1 teaspoon dried thyme, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, and add the bay leaf. Stir well, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Season generously with salt and pepper.

4 Simmer low and slow: Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 50-60 minutes ⏱️, stirring occasionally, until the beef is fork-tender and the broth has turned rich and deep. Your kitchen will smell incredible.

5 Add the beans: Stir in 2 cans white beans, drained and rinsed. Cook uncovered for 10 more minutes to thicken the stew. Remove bay leaf. Taste and adjust seasoning - it should be rich, hearty, and deeply savory.

6 Make the herb butter bread: Mix 3 tablespoons softened butter with 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped and 1 small garlic clove, minced. Slice your bread, spread generously, and toast under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until golden and fragrant. Ladle stew into deep bowls and serve with bread alongside. Pull up a chair. You've earned this. 🕯️

Notes

Why this is perfect for this week: Tuesday opens mild and pleasant - enjoy it while it lasts. By Friday, the first day of spring arrives with a cruel sense of humor: snow, sleet, and freezing rain are expected through Saturday morning. Make this stew Wednesday night and you'll have something warm and waiting no matter what the weekend throws at you. White beans make it hearty and filling without anything complicated, and every ingredient is already in most kitchens.

🎵 Vibe Pairing: Light a candle, put on Gregory Alan Isakov, Norah Jones, or a slow acoustic playlist. Pour a glass of red wine or a hot herbal tea. This is a nowhere-to-be, storm-outside, warm-bowl-in-hand kind of evening - and on the first official day of spring, you deserve exactly that.

✨ Your Perfect Mid-Week Reset: Get this stew going Wednesday while the week is still manageable - it's almost meditative, and the smell alone is worth it. Then Thursday, when the cold is building and cooking sounds like the last thing you want to do, let Amy at The Hungry Hearth take care of dinner. She delivers Tuesdays and Thursdays and trust us, the timing couldn't be better.

And if the week has just been a lot - the weather, the news, the everything - book yourself something restorative at Haven of Harmony. A massage, energy healing, a moment that belongs entirely to you. You made the stew, you ordered in, now go get taken care of. You've earned the full reset. 🕯️

🐱 Meet Snickers - Your New Fur-ever Friend!

Age: 13 years

Sex: Female Breed: Domestic cat

Location: Father John's Animal House, Lafayette, NJ

Snickers has been through more than most cats ever face - and she's still here, still looking for love, still reminding the staff when it's dinnertime.

At 13 years old, Snickers arrived at Father John's after her owner abandoned her along with several other cats. Heartbreakingly, the others didn't survive. But Snickers did. She's a fighter with a young spirit living in a seasoned soul, and after everything she's been through, all she wants now is a warm lap, consistent meals, and someone to call her own.

Don't let her age fool you. The moment you walk into her room at Father John's, Snickers bounds out of bed ready for affection. She's loving, she's communicative, and she hasn't let a hard chapter dim her warmth one bit. She does need some dental work in the near future, and is still building back her strength - but she's come so far, and she has so much more to give.

Snickers would be happiest in a calm, quiet home - ideally without dogs or young children - where she can spend her golden years feeling safe and cherished. She's been exposed to other cats and kids in previous homes, but peace and gentleness is what she needs now.

If you've ever wanted to give an animal a second chance at a beautiful ending, Snickers is your girl.
